Semester or Summer Internship

The NC Coalition for Lobbying & Government Reform is a diverse and growing nonpartisan coalition of more than 50 progressive and conservative organizations and individuals from across the state committed to promoting lobbying, ethics, and redistricting reform and improving the legislative process in North Carolina.

In 2005 and 2006 the Coalition successfully pushed for tougher lobbying and ethics reforms with the passage of SB 612 and HB 1843 in the General Assembly. The Coalition was instrumental in pressuring lawmakers to pass a more comprehensive package of lobbying and ethics reforms that:

  1. Provide more sunshine on the lobbying process (a citizen’s “right to know”)
  2. Create an Independent Ethics Commission to monitor and investigate all three branches of government
  3. Limit lobbyists’ fundraising activities for legislative candidates
  4. Enact a gift ban on lobbyists giving to legislators.
Next, the Coalition will turn its focus to redistricting reform and will be working throughout the legislative “long” session in 2007 to educate lawmakers and constituents about the needed reforms.

About the Internship: The Coalition seeks college student interns to assist with research, writing, organizing activists, and general office duties. The internship will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about:

• The structure and inner-workings of non-profit advocacy organizations
• Coalition-building
• Public policy and lobbying activities
• Grassroots Outreach
• Public policy research
• North Carolina’s political landscape and the key players
• Open government, democracy, lobbying and ethics reform, and redistricting reform issues

Hours: We are flexible with students’ schedules and are looking for interns to work 8 or 10 hours a week, typically two days a week throughout the semester or during the summer.

Skills: Detail-oriented, interest in public policy and government reform, good communication skills, solid writing and research skills. Computer skills must include a practical knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Pay: This is a volunteer internship that most students pursue for academic credit.
